honoring a legend

My personal bourbon tasting rule for self-control

My grandfather’s name was Waldo. That’s me and my cousin, Steve, on his lap with my arms up. Waldo was the life of the party. Anywhere he went, people were overjoyed to see and drink with him. I remember Waldo had a modest home bar in the basement laundry room. A bar that was more of a wire metal over-the-toilet towel rack one would see set up in a bathroom. I know had a few bottles of bourbon on it. There was typically a bottle of Woodford Reserve, a bottle of Makers Mark. But more than that, there was always a large, white 1.75L handle of Yellowstone on that bar.

I recall Waldo was rarely seen without a highball in his hand. Seeing him drinking bourbon and knowing how beloved he was put a positive connotation on bourbon for me.

Waldo passed when I was 15. It was from a number of things, but ultimately a heart attack on the 2nd hole of a golf course, likely the way he would have chosen to go out. Waldo smoked like a chimney. He drank like a fish. For me, knowing that this is in my family history, when I started getting into bourbon and collecting, I knew I had to take that seriously.

I made a promise to myself that the only times I would drink was when I was with people. I wanted to make sure it was never about the act of drinking and always more about the company, the stories, and the memories shared. This is why I truly enjoy hosting. It allows me to enjoy what I have in a positive, unselfish, and memorable way.

In 2021, a group of bourbon drinkers from Virginia and I went and did a barrel pick at Yellowstone Distillery, and after telling that story of how I honor my Grandfather, they agreed to honor him by naming that single barrel after Waldo. Called “Where’s Waldo,” it featured a Where’s Waldo style sticker with a picture of the man himself holding up a bottle.
